By the start of the summit, over 160 activists had been arrested, detained, and denied bail across Zimbabwe. In an interview with France24, Dzikamai Bere, director of the Zimbabwe Human Rights Association, expressed serious concerns about the bloc’s leadership under Mnangagwa, citing the crackdown on pro-democracy voices.

“As leaders of civil society, we continue to appeal to the heads of state to uphold the SADC protocol, which obligates them to respect human rights,” Bere stated. He also highlighted that activists arrested on their way to Victoria Falls were subjected to severe torture, raising doubts about the summit’s value to Zimbabwe and labelling it as possibly nothing more than a public relations stunt for the government.

Bere stressed the urgent need for the government and relevant stakeholders to release the detained activists, calling for the immediate release of all political prisoners and an end to the harsh repression of dissent. Leading up to the summit, Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch urged the authorities to halt the crackdown on activists and to investigate allegations of torture or ill-treatment of detainees, holding those responsible accountable through fair proceedings. They also called on SADC to demand an immediate end to this assault on human rights as it prepares to transition leadership to Mnangagwa.

Among those arrested are prominent figures such as Senator Jameson Timba, Transform Zimbabwe leader Jacob Ngarivhume, former Binga North MP Prince Dubeko Sibanda, feminist and rights defender Namatai Kwekweza, Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe secretary-general Robson Chere, and the Avondale 76. In recent weeks, Home Affairs Minister Kazembe Kazembe has reiterated the government’s determination to suppress dissent.

Meanwhile, the Crisis in Zimbabwe Coalition (CiZC) has called for the establishment of a democratic space in Zimbabwe, condemning the ongoing human rights violations, including the arbitrary arrests of pro-democracy activists ahead of the SADC summit. On its 23rd anniversary, CiCZ reaffirmed its long-standing commitment to the pursuit of a democratic and economically prosperous Zimbabwe, pledging to continue advancing the interests and aspirations of the masses.

Reflecting on the controversial 2018 elections, where state forces were deployed against unarmed civilians protesting the delayed release of presidential election results, CiCZ emphasised its role as the voice of the voiceless and a defender of society, supported by regional solidarity partners, despite the challenges posed by the shrinking democratic space in Zimbabwe and the wider SADC region.

During this visit, both leaders acknowledged the strong and longstanding ties between their countries and highlighted the enduring bonds of friendship between their peoples. Recognising the need to unlock the full potential of their bilateral relations, they took a major step forward by elevating the partnership to the status of a “Strategic Partnership.”

The Prime Ministers underscored that shared values, such as democracy, freedom, and adherence to a rules-based international order, form the core of their deepening bilateral relationship. They also reaffirmed their commitment to furthering cooperation at bilateral, regional, and global levels, aiming to contribute to a more stable, prosperous, and sustainable world.

As part of this strengthened partnership, both countries agreed to maintain regular contact between their foreign ministers and offer mutual support in international forums. The leaders also committed to an annual political dialogue at the deputy minister level, which will ensure ongoing assessment of cooperation and address international challenges.

Mutual trade and investment relations are another key element of the new partnership. Poland and India have committed to strengthening cooperation in sectors such as advanced technologies, agriculture, food technologies, energy, green technologies, infrastructure, smart cities, pharmaceuticals, and mining. The goal is to foster sustainable bilateral trade and facilitate economic exchange and investment. Regular meetings of the Joint Commission for Economic Cooperation (JCEC) will play a significant role in this process, while also helping to build supply chain resilience and ensure economic security.

Another important aspect is cooperation on sustainable and environmentally friendly technologies, including the promotion of cleaner energy approaches such as clean coal technologies. As part of this collaboration, both countries will develop advanced mining systems and innovative technologies. Additionally, an agreement is planned for cooperation in the safe and sustainable use of outer space.

The significance of transport and communication in the context of international cooperation was not overlooked. Poland and India decided to develop joint infrastructure projects and expand air connectivity, further enhancing economic and tourism cooperation between the two nations.

During the meeting, the two leaders jointly condemned terrorism in all its forms. They pledged to intensify efforts to combat the financing and support of terrorism, ensuring that no form of support for individuals or groups involved in such activities would be tolerated. Cooperation in cybersecurity was also highlighted, including information sharing, joint legislative and operational actions to prevent cyberattacks, and education and awareness-building initiatives.

Healthcare cooperation was another key focus. Both countries agreed to exchange information and expertise while strengthening contacts between health experts. These efforts aim to improve the healthcare systems in both Poland and India.

Culture and people-to-people ties remain essential elements of the partnership. Both sides committed to supporting artistic, scientific, and linguistic exchanges between cultural institutions and promoting the Student Exchange Program. Cultural events, including festivals celebrating the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Poland and India, are planned. Additionally, tourism cooperation, aimed at increasing the flow of tourists between the two countries, will further strengthen people-to-people connections.

In the context of relations with the European Union, Poland and India agreed to support the conclusion of trade and investment negotiations between India and the EU. A key element of this cooperation will be the launch of the India-EU Trade and Technology Council (TTC), aimed at enhancing cooperation in trade, technology, and security. Furthermore, the implementation of the India-EU Connectivity Partnership will help strengthen strategic ties between India and the European Union.

The meeting between the heads of government of Poland and India marks a key moment in the history of their bilateral relations. The strategic partnership agreements signed for 2024-2028 cover a wide range of cooperation, from politics and security to trade, healthcare, and culture, providing a solid foundation for further strengthening and developing these relations on the international stage.

Over the years, ARTICLE 19 has urged governments, including those in Poland and Germany, to halt mass surveillance practices and enhance transparency and oversight of secret services and law enforcement agencies. The organization has also raised concerns about the deployment of surveillance technologies like spyware against opposition figures and the increasing statutory powers granted to intelligence agencies in various European countries.

The European Court of Human Rights found that governments, including those of Poland and Germany, violated Article 8 of the European Convention on Human Rights, which guarantees the right to respect for private and family life. This violation stemmed from the mass retention of communications data for potential use by national authorities, lack of independent oversight, and the secret surveillance measures under respective national anti-terrorism legislation.

This ruling sends a clear message to European governments that any measures infringing on privacy rights must be accompanied by robust judicial oversight and transparent legal frameworks, ensuring that fundamental freedoms are not undermined by state surveillance activities.

Uttrakhand: Celebrations at Sahara Christian Academy
Under the leadership of Rev. R. Stephan Diyali, Zonal Volunteer Coordinator IHRC in Uttarakhand, the celebrations took place at Sahara Christian Academy in Joshiyara, Uttarkashi. The event was attended by children and adults alike, who enthusiastically participated in the Independence Day celebrations, recalling the historic event of 1947. The programme, full of joy and patriotism, highlighted the value of freedom and human rights. The meeting also discussed the role of the IHRC in promoting these values. Participants were informed about opportunities to support local communities in protecting human rights.

Delhi: Celebrations organised by Rev. Kailash Kuriya
Celebration in Delhi, organised by Rev. Kailash Kuriya Zonal Volunteer Coordinator IHRC and Madhu Kuriya Official Volunteer IHRC, brought the local community together to celebrate the country’s independence. The programme, as in other parts of India, aimed to promote human rights and educate about the work of the IHRC. The event helped to create awareness about the protection of human rights and opportunities to support those in need.

Uttar Pradesh: Celebrations in Mau
In Mau, in the state of Uttar Pradesh, celebrations were organised by Bishop Radha Krishna Zonal Volunteer Coordinator IHRC for the region. During the event, which brought together a large number of local people, participants celebrated India’s independence and learned about opportunities to support human rights activities in their region. The programme aimed to strengthen community ties and highlight the value of working together for community development.

Haryana: Community support action
In Haryana, under the leadership of Rev. Mehar Chand Official Volunteer organised a celebration that was combined with a community outreach campaign. Following the programme, around 150 people were provided with meals and refreshments. This event was not only an opportunity to celebrate Independence Day, but also to help those in need, reinforcing IHRC efforts to build a more just society.

Delhi: Event in Devli, Khanpur
Another elebration in the capital Delhi, under the chairmanship of Rev. Dr. Santosh Swain Zonal Volunteer Coordinator, an event was held at Devli, Khanpur. They brought together a large number of participants, both children and adults, to celebrate India’s independence. The celebrations were also an opportunity to highlight the role IHRC plays in protecting human rights in India. The programme aimed to educate on promoting peace and human rights and support for those in need.

India’s Independence Day celebrations, organised by the International Human Rights Commission, were not only an opportunity to commemorate the historic event of 1947, but also to highlight the importance of values such as freedom and human rights. Celebrations in various states brought local communities together to celebrate and learn how to support efforts to protect human rights.

Each of the ceremony chairs expressed their thankfulness for the support provided by key IHRC leaders, including IHRC Secretary General Prof.H.C. Rafal Marcin Wasik, H.E. Jaroslaw Tatarowski (MVC). Bishop H.E. Samsher Khan, IHRC Peace Ambassador and IHRC Special Editor for Asia, highlighting their commitment to promoting human rights and peace in India. These events not only celebrated India’s independence, but also helped strengthen IHRC’s efforts to build a more just and informed society.

As part of a commitment to commemorate it, the International Human Rights Commission (IHRC) in Nigeria has called for urgent and comprehensive action by national and state actors against human trafficking.

IHRC’s Ambassador-at-Large/Head of Diplomatic Mission in Nigeria, H.E. Ambassador Dr. Duru Hezekiah, in his statement through the Head of Media and Strategic Communications, Mr. Fidelis Onakpoma, said human trafficking is one of the most heinous crimes of our time.

According to him, human trafficking undermines the security of states because it is related to organized crime and corruption, and because some traffickers deal not only in people but also in drugs, weapons, and other goods.

But most obviously, trafficking violates the human rights of trafficked persons who are exploited, raped, and sometimes killed.

Dr. Duru noted that the International Human Rights Commission-IHRC in Nigeria has an MOU with the National Prohibition for the Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), working together in the fight against human trafficking across the Nigerian States.

He said the fight against human trafficking has three components: the prosecution of traffickers, the protection of trafficked persons, and the prevention of trafficking.

He further urged governments not to leave any child behind in the fight against human trafficking but rather explore comprehensive action by establishing a task force on human trafficking in respective states to help in identifying victims, investigating networks, disrupting operations, and prosecuting traffickers.

“The force should comprise of major state actors such as the Attorney General/Commissioner of Justice, NAPTIP, Commissioners of Women Affairs and Information, the NDLEA, Officers of the Nigeria Police and Migration, amongst others”, he maintained.

As they have many common objectives, the State of the African Diaspora (SOAD) and the Transnational Intergovernmental Foundation-International Human Rights Commission-IHRC, have this day signed a treaty to support human rights in the world.

In a recent development, Dr. Louis-Georges Tin, Prime Minister of SOAD, and Prof. h.c. Rafal Marcin Wasik IHRC Secretary-General met a few days ago in Szidonia Castle, and after a few discussions, they quickly saw that they had similar views and activities. That is why they decided to share their skills and resources.

The Parties (SOAD and IHRC ) intend to find the possible ways to develop cooperation on humanitarian policies and to exchange ideas, experiences, and contacts on issues of common interest to the Parties through the Treaty.

For example, SOAD and IHRC will observe elections together whenever it is relevant; the two parties will work to support the African migrants in North Africa; and they will consider sharing diplomatic missions wherever it is strategic for them.

In his remarks, Prime Minister Dr. Louis, expressed his gratitude saying, “I am very glad to have this opportunity to work with IHRC. I appreciate the vision, energy, and expertise of the organization. We will certainly do a good job together.”

Similarly, Prof. h.c. Rafal Marcin Wasik while conveying his gratitude, said, “This jointly signed Treaty with the SOAD State and thanks to the broad vision of the Prime Minister, we will go together to observe democratic processes in Africa in a non-political way. Shaking hands together I would like to thank the Prime Minister that together we will try to stimulate the Agro Sector to create jobs in Africa by programming animal, vegetable, and fruit production”.

“We will jointly encourage large European concerns to contract the Agro sector in the territory of African countries, thus preventing the economic migration of African citizens looking for work in European countries. I believe that what we do today, we do for generations”, Prof Rafal Marcin added.

The Transnational Intergovernmental Organization – International Human Rights Commission, IHRC with headquarters in Zurich, Switzerland has honored the President of the Association of Foreign Airlines and Representatives in Nigeria, Dr. Kingsley Nwokoma, with an International Humanitarian Service Award for 2023.

In a letter conveying the award and signed by the Secretary-General of the International Human Rights Commission, IHRC, Prof. h.c. Rafal Marcin Wasik and the Head of the Diplomatic Mission, Nigeria, His Excellency, Ambassador Dr. Duru Hezekiah stated that his selection was based on his invaluable humanitarian works over the years in upholding humanitarian interventions in Nigeria particularly in youth development.

Similarly, Dr. Kingsley Nwokoma was named one of the IHRC Stakeholders due to his act of magnanimity and support for the activities of the Special Monitoring Mission in Nigeria.

Presenting the Award at the International Conference Center on Friday 8th September 2023 in Abuja, the Secretary-General Prof. Chief Rafal Marcin Wasik commended Dr. Kingsley’s active participation in humanitarian services and policy advisory role in shaping economic growth in Nigeria, urging him to continue in such direction of changing lives.

The visit was led by Secretary-General Prof Rafal Marcin Wasik accompanied by the IHRC Managing Director of Control Department H.E. Ambassador at Large J. Tatarowski and other officials of the Commission in Nigeria.

The Delegation was received by the Director-General of the Institute Dr. Joseph Ochogwu, and issues on conflict resolutions, mediation, policy advisory, information sharing, peacebuilding, capacity building, humanitarian interventions, partnership, research, and training were deliberated.

The Secretary-General expressed the readiness of the organization to offer intergovernmental platforms for communications, observation missions, and participation towards promoting the culture of peace in Nigeria.

While responding, the DG IPCR Dr. Joseph Ochogwu, commended IHRC’s global focus on human rights and peacebuilding, emphasizing the core mandate of the Institute which is primarily inclusive in peacebuilding.

He further appreciated the Secretary-General and his team, adding that the Institute is ready to collaborate with the Commission to advance its efforts on peacebuilding and conflict resolutions
