The Special Monitoring Mission (SMM) of the International Human Rights Commission -IHRC in Katsina State, Nigeria, convened a general meeting on 20th October 2024 at Kipdeco Building Complex, No. 61, IBB Way, Katsina. The event brought together esteemed members and participants dedicated to advancing human rights initiatives across the state.
The meeting commenced at 10:00 a.m. with an opening prayer led by a member. This was followed by a warm welcome address from Commissioner Kamaluddeen Yahaya, the Coordinator of the Special Monitoring Mission IHRC in Katsina, who expressed his gratitude for the unwavering commitment and support of the members in driving forward the organisation’s vision and mission. The minutes from the previous meeting were read and reviewed, with particular focus on key activities and initiatives. A motion for adoption of the minutes was moved by a member and seconded by another, making the minutes officially binding. The meeting also addressed challenges faced by the organisation and reflected on lessons learned.
Commissioner Kamaluddeen Yahaya presented a detailed report highlighting the major achievements of IHRC in 2024, with particular emphasis on the promotion of human rights within Katsina State and across Nigeria. He also emphasised the core objectives and significance of volunteering within IHRC’s framework. The discussions led to the development of strategies aimed at overcoming current challenges and boosting volunteer morale, which in turn is expected to enhance overall performance.
As the discussions drew to a close, volunteers expressed their appreciation for the valuable insights gained into the essence of volunteering and the critical role they play in advancing the organisation’s success. Key areas for improvement were also identified, including the need for increased human rights awareness and the recruitment of more skilled volunteers.
Due to time constraints, refreshments were served during the meeting. Participants worked together to develop strategic solutions to address potential challenges in future IHRC activities. Capacity building workshops and fostering strategic partnerships with stakeholders were identified as key measures to mitigate the challenges.
The urgency of implementing capacity-building initiatives and strengthening partnerships with relevant stakeholders was repeatedly underscored throughout the meeting.
As there were no further items for discussion, Commissioner Kamaluddeen Yahaya extended his gratitude for the participants’ contributions and encouraged continued vigilance, dedication, and collaboration to achieve the organisation’s objectives. The meeting concluded with a closing prayer and group photographs to commemorate the successful event. Volunteers effectively addressed pressing issues, celebrated the organisation’s achievements, and charted a course for greater impact in future human rights advocacy.
