A grand award ceremony was held in Cotonou to honour Alain, the initiator of the ‘Cotonou Ville Propre’ (Cotonou Clean City) project. This event marked the launch of a new environmental initiative titled ‘Africa Clean Continent’, with its General Secretariat to be based in Bouaké, Ivory Coast.
Mrs. Adrienne Soundele has been appointed as the organisation’s Secretary-General, leading efforts in coordination with the National Programme of the Transnational Intergovernmental IHRC Corporation, for the Republic of Ivory Coast, covering the countries belonging to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
The ‘Africa Clean Continent’ initiative is not limited to tackling urban pollution but also aims to establish urban forests in Cotonou. This project will be implemented as part of a joint environmental diplomacy programme to combat climate change and preserve biodiversity. The initiative involves the ‘Bénin Ville Propre’ Organisation and the Soundelé Konan Foundation, which will focus on the protection and development of flora and fauna.
These efforts will receive additional support from the Transnational Intergovernmental IHRC Corporation, which, through its National Coordination for Ivory Coast, will oversee and actively participate in the implementation of this programme. This collaboration aims not only to improve environmental conditions but also to introduce professional and diplomatic mechanisms for project management, ensuring its effective execution across the ECOWAS region.
The ‘Africa Clean Continent’ initiative represents a step towards sustainable development and a long-term ecological strategy for West Africa. It also serves as proof that partnerships between international organisations, local foundations, and governmental sectors can bring about real changes in environmental protection and the quality of life for residents of the region.
