RAN: IHRC takes Part in Anti-government Extremism Webinar

On March 30, 2023, a representative of the International Human Rights Commission (IHRC) Commissioner Robert Banaszek, participated in a webinar for Radicalisation Awareness Network (RAN) practitioners “Anti-government extremism, experience, and challenges”

According to Robert Banaszek, the webinar addressed the new topic of anti-government extremism (AGX) and its impact on communities, politicians, and other democracies. During the webinar, participants explored the connection between anti-government sentiment, legitimate protest, anti-government conspiracies, and radicalization. An attempt was also made to examine the concept of AGX ideology as a particular threat to individual politicians, civil servants, policemen, journalists, and other organizations and state institutions that are intimidated or even attacked.

During the Webinar, the participants were familiarized with the conclusions of the RAN LOCAL and RAN POL meeting, which were presented and discussed by Working Group Leaders: Annela Portman and Luc Van Der Taelen.

Participants also focused on the evolution of the AGX phenomenon. It was shown how democratic protest and social dissatisfaction are radicalized by conspiracy extremists. It also discusses how dynamic the AGX phenomenon is, which often leads to building a climate delegitimizing the rule of law and state power. The discussion also concerned the indication of examples of how, for example, local governments and law enforcement agencies are challenged by new forms of protest, various groups and ideologies, and the progressive radicalization of events.
The source and background of such behaviors and the susceptibility of social groups to AGX narratives are also discussed.

“The webinar of RAN practitioners is a perfect place to exchange views for all people operating in the state’s internal security sector. It is a working platform for an in-depth analysis of dangerous social phenomena as well as for developing solutions to prevent radicalization that may pose a real threat to the functioning of democratic institutions”, he added.

On the 4th of March, the community of the urban district of Cazenga, specifically the “Quinta da Graça” school complex, received the commission with open hands, and on the 18th of March 2023, witnessed the epilogue of this journey. It is worth mentioning that the “Community Dialogue” is a project that aims to dialogue with the communities, and diagnose the main problems, to better remedy them.

The closing of the event was attended by more than 60 teenagers and adults, as well as teachers and directors of the aforementioned institution. In a friendly and familiarizing environment, psychologist Euclênia Justo, in response to the commission’s invitation, addressed the following:

Subject: IHRC-Young Entrepreneurs;

IHRC Representation of the UN Youth from Africa and Mexico

The International Human Rights Commission (IHRC) implores world leaders on importance of engaging young entrepreneurs in navigating a new world, stating that it is only by partnership with the youth that can solve pressing global challenges, and ultimately make the world a better place for all.

The assertion was made on Thursday by IHRC Goodwill Ambassador, Daphne McKinley at the Second Edition of the Parliament of Sustainable Peace within the Federation of Leaders for the nations for Latin America and the Caribbean A.C. in Mexico.
Ambassador Daphne McKinley affirmed that the youths can be helped in driving the positive change needed in global economy system by creating supportive and creative communities with industry leaders, academics, and individuals of influence, where the young visionary entrepreneurs can connect, learn, grow, and collaborate.

Daphne emphasized the need to create platforms in order to:

encourage young entrepreneurs to achieve their highest level of success and fulfil their full potential.

empower young entrepreneurs by providing mentorship and support as they enhance their resources and capabilities to generate substantial environmental, social, and governance to make an impact in society.

educate young entrepreneurs on how to navigate the transition of their companies into future technology.

“We have all the solutions at our fingertips, we now need to implement the solutions. Technology will play a major key for future industry. It will provide the changes that need to happen to make a sustainable future. Heath care, Education, Green energy, Agriculture, Waste management all areas that can make a real difference to a sustainable world”, she noted.

IHRC Goodwill Ambassador, Daphne McKinley

While thanking the organizers, the Body of Leadership representing the Government of the Republic of Mexico and the Caribbean, she maintained that the need to encourage the young entrepreneurs in all these areas cannot be overemphasized.

“However, we cannot achieve all of this without Peace. Peace leads to economic growth, peace builds trust when it has been broken, peace brings innovation and accelerates technology which in turn brings well-being and good relations between all peoples”, she added.

STATE OF THE NATION AND ROLE OF ELECTORATES: H.E. Dr. Duru Hezekiah Full Text Message

The Ambassador at Large and Head of Diplomatic Mission IHRC Nigeria, H.E. Ambassador (Dr.) Duru Hezekiah laments the deplorable system of Nigeria’s society, urging electorates to actively participate in the 2023 election as a medium to determine the next leader of the country. He asserted Abuja over the weekend during a press briefing.

Nigeria is a Federal Republic comprising 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. History keeps repeating itself in a more jeopardizing way as the Nigerian state is allegedly run by a small cartel of self-serving elites whose purpose is to provide an avenue for their cooperation across religious and ethnic divisions, just enough to divvy up state oil revenue among themselves and their counterparts; making them do little or none in improving the lot of the vast majority of Nigerians.

The Nigerian State is centralized but weak, while true political power is decentralized in government and non-governmental entities.

Nigerians over decades have faced numerous tragedies on the high cost of living, masses graves resulting from banditry and insecurities insurgencies, hunger, massacre, tribalism, looting, kidnapping, ASUU Strike, etc.

Nigerians from across the country are lamenting the hardships in the land, crying out for urgent measures by the government at all levels to mitigate their suffering which they said was becoming intolerable.

It is a truism with everything is broken down, our country has become one big emergency national hospital with full occupancy…Our hearts are broken. Our family dreams are broken. Homes are broken. Churches, mosques, and infrastructure are broken. Our educational system is broken. Our children’s lives and futures are broken. Our politics is broken. Our economy is broken. Our energy system is broken. Our security system is broken. Our roads and rails are broken. Only corruption is alive and well. Nigerians can no longer recognize their country which has been battered and buffeted by men and women from the dark womb of time”.

Fellow Nigerians, All of us are victims of a sick Nigeria! The 2023 general election is here; it’s time to decide on another leader for our dear nation. We simply cannot fold our hands but need to participate in building a country that works for everyone through our votes.

I appeal to Nigerians everywhere not to entertain or give energy to unnecessary confrontation but rise to cast their votes. Knowing that the enemy of Nigeria is bad leadership, we need to push these narratives out there and as urgently as possible before those who know how to use ethnic and religious violence to make a statement seize the day!

Impressively, Nigerian youths are giving more to the coming election ever than before. It’s one good thing that came out of our current nightmare!

Let me conclude with the words of Charles de Gaulle, one-time President of France said; “politics is too serious a matter to be left to the politicians”.

For once, let our votes reflect our earnest yearning.
A New Nigeria is Possible!

The Secretary-General of the International Human Rights Commission (IHRC) Switzerland, Prof. Rafał Marcin Wasik has commended the accreditation of IHRC by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as a Foreign Election Observer to observe the 2023 general elections in Nigeria.

The Secretary-General in a statement made available by the Ambassador at Large and Head of the Diplomatic Mission to Nigeria, Ambassador Dr. Duru Hezekiah, asserted that “today, the International Human Rights Commission Switzerland received an invitation from the Federal Republic of Nigeria to join other International and Intergovernmental Organizations to help observe the 2023 general elections in Nigeria”.

“I am glad and I wish to especially thank the leadership of President Muhammadu Buhari GCFR for ensuring policies and practices for International communities to participate in a critical time of Nigeria’s transition, as well, I urge him to strengthen the adequate provision of security to further deepen democracy”.

“You may know that election observation remains a valuable tool for improving the quality of elections and an important mechanism for ensuring election integrity in countries; through our observation IHRC seek to detect any infractions in the electoral process, providing concerned bodies with remarks on the progress of the electoral process and decisions taken while guaranteeing the integrity and neutrality of the electoral process.

“For this reason, IHRC as a Diplomatic Member of the Migration and Home Affairs Department of the European Commission, the Executive Civil Service of the European Union, shall strengthen diplomatic ties, enhance the justice system, foster practices for peaceful democracy transition, ensure that eligible citizens have the opportunity to participate and have a voice in how they will be governed through elections”.

Rafał maintained that IHRC has played critical roles in the transition to the democratic process in different countries including Africa, helping to build public confidence in the honesty of electoral processes.
