The festival was honored by the presence of several distinguished guests. The Chief Guest was Hon. Sunil Watagala, Deputy Minister of Justice. Among the Guests of Honor were Dr. Chrishantha Dissanayake, Commissioner of the International Human Rights Commission IHRC Corporation in Sri Lanka and Founder/Chairman of the Shri Hela Cultural Collaboration Foundation; Mr. Prashantha Lal de Alwis, Principal of the Law School; Mr. Rajeev Amarasuriya, President of the Bar Association; and IHRC Coordinators Mr. Jayatissa Athaudahetti, Ms. Shalika Edirisinghe, and Ms. Michelle Dilhara.

The day’s festivities commenced with traditional rituals, including the boiling of milk and the preparation of the New Year table, symbolizing prosperity and new beginnings. Attendees enthusiastically participated in various traditional games such as “kotta poraya” (pillow fighting), “kana mutti bidheema” (breaking the clay pot blindfolded), tug-of-war, and water bottle filling, fostering camaraderie and joy among participants. A highlight of the event was the selection and crowning of the 2025 Avurudu Princess and Prince, a ceremony conducted by the distinguished guests, celebrating the youth and cultural ambassadors within the legal community.

Dr. Chrishantha Dissanayake, in his address, emphasized the importance of cultural events in strengthening communal bonds and promoting human rights awareness. He reiterated the IHRC’s commitment to supporting initiatives that foster unity and cultural heritage, aligning with the organization’s broader mission of advocating for human rights and social cohesion.

The “Aluthkade Avurudu” festival served as a testament to the harmonious blend of legal tradition and cultural celebration, reinforcing the values of unity, respect, and cultural pride within Sri Lanka’s legal community. The International Human Rights Commission IHRC Corporation commends the organizers and participants for their dedication to preserving and celebrating the nation’s rich cultural tapestry.
