Abuja, Nigeria – 11 December 2025
The Federal Government of Nigeria and the International Human Rights Commission (IHRC Corporation) have reinforced their long-standing collaboration with the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) during a high-level diplomatic visit to the agency’s headquarters in Abuja. The engagement marks a renewed phase of operational synergy in Nigeria’s national anti-trafficking efforts.

The IHRC delegation was led by H.E. Ambassador (Dr.) Hezekiah Duru, Ambassador-at-Large and Head of the Diplomatic Mission in Nigeria. The visit aligned with IHRC Corporation’s ongoing reforms and restructuring, following the relocation of its global headquarters from Switzerland to the United States — a strategic shift aimed at expanding the Commission’s humanitarian reach and strengthening global coordination mechanisms.

During the meeting, IHRC reaffirmed the validity of the 2020 Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Commission and NAPTIP. Ambassador Duru noted that the renewed engagement reflects both institutions’ commitment to enhancing technical cooperation, strengthening rescue capabilities, and accelerating the response against trafficking and exploitation.

A key highlight of the discussion was IHRC’s recent joint rescue operation in Taraba State, conducted in collaboration with NAPTIP operatives, which resulted in the recovery of 17 victims of human trafficking. Ambassador Duru emphasized that such interventions demonstrate the practical value of inter-agency collaboration and the need to reinvigorate long-standing partnerships across Nigeria’s anti-trafficking landscape.

The delegation also raised concerns regarding groups falsely claiming affiliation with IHRC. Ambassador Duru outlined the Commission’s operational structure in Nigeria, comprising over 1,500 volunteers, coordinated through State and Regional Coordinators, a National Volunteers Coordinator, and the Head of Mission. This structure, he noted, ensures accountability, rapid response and nationwide operational capacity.

In response, NAPTIP Director-General, Binta L. Adamu Bello, commended IHRC’s continued support to national anti-trafficking efforts. She acknowledged the operational relevance of the existing MoU and confirmed that the agency’s technical department would conduct a full review to update and strengthen the document accordingly.

NAPTIP officials further requested verification documents to address impersonation concerns. Ambassador Duru confirmed that IHRC would provide the required materials promptly, adding that IHRC remains an independent global humanitarian organisation, supported by partners and individual donors, and is not funded by any government.

The meeting also underscored the historical continuity of IHRC’s engagement in Nigeria, recalling the earlier official visit of Prof. h.c. Rafal Marcin Wasik, Secretary-General of the IHRC Corporation. The longstanding cooperation, the delegation noted, reflects IHRC’s sustained commitment to supporting Nigerian institutions in combating human trafficking and protecting vulnerable populations.

The visit concluded with a symbolic gift presentation to NAPTIP’s Director-General, followed by an official photograph session — marking a renewed chapter of collaboration in Nigeria’s fight against trafficking and exploitation.

Over 42,000 Affected as Humanitarian Crisis Deepens in Nigeria’s North-East

Adamawa State, Nigeria – 5 August 2025

Disaster Assessment Reveals Scale of Tragedy

The International Human Rights Commission (IHRC) Corporation Nigeria has released a comprehensive disaster report following severe flooding across six Local Government Areas (LGAs) in Adamawa State: Yola South, Yola North, Numan, Demsa, Girei, and Lamurde. The crisis has left 6,732 households affected, 42,118 individuals impacted, 27 confirmed fatalities, 74 injured, and over 15,000 displaced, now seeking refuge in IDP camps and host communities.

The findings, based on a Rapid Needs and Risk Assessment conducted on 30 July 2025 by the IHRC Special Monitoring Mission, in collaboration with Adamawa State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), DAWOS Foundation, AB Haske Foundation, and local authorities, document widespread destruction of homes, farmland, sanitation, and increasing risks of gender-based violence, disease outbreaks, and food insecurity.

IHRC Humanitarian Response and Partnerships

IHRC deployed emergency teams to deliver urgent relief, including:

Distribution of Non-Food Items (NFIs) to over 850 households: blankets, dignity kits, mosquito nets, utensils,

Essential medications for malaria, typhoid, and infections, in partnership with local health agencies,

Psychosocial and protection support – including group therapy for women, children, and the elderly.

“The spirit of cooperation and urgency shown by Adamawa State officials is deeply commendable. Their partnership with IHRC ensured that thousands of affected citizens received not just attention but real assistance. This is a model worthy of national replication.”
— Comrade Elijah Vitus Echendu, National Coordinator, IHRC Special Monitoring Mission Nigeria

Leadership Commendations and Strategic Appeal

His Excellency Ambassador Dr. Duru Hezekiah, Head of IHRC Diplomatic Mission in Nigeria, described the flood disaster as a part of a growing national emergency. He urged strategic, rights-based, and united responses:

“What we see in Adamawa is not isolated. Floods are recurring and threatening multiple states across Nigeria. This demands a coordinated, strategic, and rights-based national response.”

Ambassador Duru also:

Commended the IHRC North-East team for their exemplary work,

Called for deeper institutional cooperation between government and humanitarian actors,

Urged joint flood mitigation and early warning systems, and investment in recovery and preparedness.

“Let this be a turning point—where the government and IHRC work shoulder-to-shoulder to prevent avoidable suffering and build a Nigeria where disaster response is swift, coordinated, and dignified.”

Key Humanitarian and Recovery Priorities Identified

IHRC highlights the following urgent needs:

Food assistance for displaced families,

Restoration of clean water and sanitation infrastructure,

Provision of safe, durable shelters,

Sustained psychosocial support,

Livelihood restoration and income generation.

Additional recommendations:

Improved access and logistics for aid agencies in hard-to-reach regions,

Long-term investment in flood mitigation, climate awareness, and disaster preparedness.

A Call for Systemic Reform and Shared Accountability

The 2025 Adamawa flood disaster is a stark reminder of the fragility of communities amid climate change. Through coordinated assessments and field interventions, IHRC is committed to advocacy and direct support for affected populations.

IHRC now calls on federal and state governments, international donors, and civil society to seize this moment for systemic humanitarian reform, resilience building, and shared accountability.

IHRC Corporation: Setting New Benchmarks in International Effectiveness

IHRC Corporation, founded in 2023 in New Mexico by Prof. h.c. Rafał Marcin Wasik and Maj. Gen. Romanos Raad, is an independent, transnational intergovernmental organization (IGO) operating strictly under international law: the United Nations Charter, the Geneva Convention, the Vienna Convention, and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The organization holds IRS 501(c)(3) status as a Domestic Nonprofit Corporation in the USA.

IHRC serves as a neutral arbitrator and mediator in some of the world’s most volatile conflict zones. Its flagship initiative, the Peacemaker Force, is a rapid-response formation currently deployed in the Gaza Strip. Here, IHRC, as the only organization with full accreditation in Israel, provides direct humanitarian assistance to civilians—delivering food, water, medicines, and logistical support to millions in need.

A Global Network of Diplomacy and Humanitarian Aid

IHRC runs official diplomatic missions and humanitarian projects in:

Democratic Republic of the Congo

Lebanon

Nigeria

Niger

Pakistan

Georgia

USA
It actively supports democratization, monitors elections, and implements legislative solutions.

The organization has signed bilateral agreements with:

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine (2022)

Government of the DR Congo (Headquarters Agreement, 2023)

State of the African Diaspora

Ivory Coast, Chad, Guinea-Bissau, Niger

Republic of Abkhazia, Georgia, and the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (Ayn Issa)

IHRC also collaborates with the BRICS Alliance, INTERPOL CENTER UN, AU – ECOSOCC, NAPTIP Nigeria, Legal Aid Board Sierra Leone, and numerous local partners across every continent.

Diplomatic Corps and Organizational Innovation

International Human Rights Commission Issues Global Appeal for Coordinated Action

Abuja, Nigeria | July 2025

United Call Against Escalating Threats

The International Human Rights Commission (IHRC) has formally issued a global appeal to world leaders, including His Excellency President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, urging a united and coordinated response to the growing challenges of terrorism, insecurity, and human rights violations destabilising vulnerable regions worldwide, notably Nigeria.

The official appeal, conveyed through a Statement of Verbale by IHRC Secretary-General, Prof. Rafał Marcin Wasik, was submitted to the Nigerian President by H.E. Ambassador Dr. Duru Hezekiah, IHRC’s Head of Diplomatic Mission to Nigeria. The document highlights IHRC’s deep concern regarding the increasing humanitarian toll of violence, conflict, and displacement, and calls for immediate, principled action at both national and international levels.

A Global Crisis Demanding Immediate Action

“In light of the increasing tragedies affecting millions worldwide — including victims of insurgency and terrorism — I respectfully call upon the global community to act without delay. Our collective responsibility is to uphold the principles of justice, compassion, and human dignity.”
Prof. Rafał Marcin Wasik, IHRC Secretary-General

Prof. Wasik described the current global situation as a crisis requiring solidarity, decisive governance, and humanitarian leadership. He stressed the urgent need to address serious issues such as forced displacement, abductions, food insecurity, trafficking in persons, and the use of civilians as shields in armed conflict. Special concern was expressed over the plight of hostages held by violent groups in regions including the Middle East, and the need for robust civilian protection in conflict zones.

Nigeria at the Forefront of the Struggle

While acknowledging the international dimensions of the crisis, IHRC placed particular emphasis on Nigeria, where communities — especially in rural and agrarian areas — remain vulnerable to repeated attacks from bandits, insurgents, and non-state armed groups.

“Nigeria, as a regional leader, possesses the capacity and moral authority to advance lasting peace and security for its people. We encourage the government to strengthen its response through inclusive, rights-based, and community-oriented approaches.”
Prof. Rafał Marcin Wasik

Diplomatic Engagement and Humanitarian Commitment

In support of the appeal, Ambassador Dr. Duru Hezekiah emphasised IHRC’s appreciation for Nigeria’s efforts to address insecurity, while calling for an elevated and urgent humanitarian response.

“The communities most affected by violence must not be forgotten. Through this diplomatic engagement with the Presidency, we aim to strengthen international cooperation and support Nigeria’s path toward stability and national cohesion.”
Amb. Dr. Duru Hezekiah, Head of IHRC Diplomatic Mission to Nigeria

Ambassador Hezekiah reaffirmed that the IHRC diplomatic mission in Nigeria is committed to supporting initiatives that protect human lives and dignity, particularly in areas experiencing protracted crises. He stressed the necessity for meaningful action, grounded in the rule of law and shared responsibility, to prevent further loss of life.

“It is no longer sufficient to rely on statements of concern. The protection of civilians must now be a national and global priority.”

A Call for Global Partnership

The IHRC affirms that the world stands at a pivotal moment that demands moral clarity and collaborative engagement. The organisation remains committed to working with the Nigerian government, regional stakeholders, and the international community to develop sustainable frameworks for security, development, and human rights protection.

“Let us choose the path of peace, empathy, and courageous leadership. Let us give voice to the voiceless and strength to the vulnerable.”
Prof. Rafał Marcin Wasik

On Friday, June 28, 2024, the International Human Rights Commission (IHRC) Special Monitoring Mission in Ogun State, Nigeria, participated in the global campaign against drug abuse and illicit trafficking through an educational event. This initiative aligns with the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, marked annually on June 26.

The event, aimed at raising awareness and combating these pressing issues, was chaired by Kazeem Lukman, Zonal Volunteer Coordinator for Ogun State. He was joined by Engineer Oke Ganiyu, Comrade Ishola Taiwo, and Dr. Abatan Adio. The session focused on the detrimental effects of drug abuse and illicit trafficking, particularly among children and youth.

Volunteer Lukman opened the session by expressing his gratitude and providing an overview of the global challenge posed by drug abuse and illicit trafficking. He emphasized the urgent need for significant interventions to address these problems effectively. “Drug abuse and illicit trafficking are global threats that require a giant’s intervention,” he stated.

In his address, Volunteer Lukman called on experts to reach out to more people daily to curb the meritocratic attitudes of violators. He urged schools, communities, churches, and mosques to actively participate in awareness campaigns to prevent these activities. He underscored the importance of these campaigns, particularly on the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.

Volunteer Lukman also highlighted the readiness of the Special Monitoring Mission in Ogun State to support this crucial mission. He stressed the role of constant mentoring, knowledge sharing, youth engagement, empowerment, and the creation of reporting lines and departments to curb drug abuse and illicit trafficking.

Engineer Oke Ganiyu took the stage to further educate the attendees on the dangers of drug abuse and illicit trafficking, particularly for students. He praised the IHRC’s movement, noting its significant role in preventing these issues. The principal of Optimum Model College, where the event was held, commended the IHRC for their efforts in tackling the problem.

In his concluding remarks, Volunteer Lukman thanked all the volunteers present and those who supported the initiative financially. “God bless all who contribute to this noble cause,” he said.

The IHRC Ogun State’s active participation in this campaign underscores its commitment to fighting drug abuse and illicit trafficking through education and community involvement.
