YOLA – About 50 Senior Officers of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) received training on strengthening officers’ capacities in case management, human rights, gender-based violence (GBV), and psychology first aid (PFA).
The Officers were trained during a one-day capacity-building program organized by the Special Monitoring Mission of the International Human Rights Commission IHRC Corporation in Nigeria, Adamawa State Chapter, in collaboration with NSCDC at the Federal Secretariat Complex, Yola Hall.
Mustapha Tukur, Coordinator of IHRC’s Special Monitoring Mission in Adamawa State, stated that the training was designed to enhance understanding of human rights principles and their application in case management
It was emphasized that the training tends to contribute to the development of skills in managing cases using a human rights approach, and equipping NSCDC’s officers with knowledge on gender-based violence and psychology first aid.
Mustapha reiterated IHRC’s support for security stakeholders in Nigeria, underscoring H.E. Ambassador Dr. Duru Hezekiah’s tireless efforts as the Commission’s Ambassador-at-Large and Head of the Diplomatic Mission in Nigeria.
Halima Usman Hoina and Dr. Halima Bakari Betso, trainers at the event, educated NSCDC Officers on effective case handling, ensuring human rights are respected and protected throughout the process.
Additionally, they were educated on the importance of recognizing and responding to gender-based violence, ensuring that officers are equipped to handle such cases sensitively, and also received training in basic psychological first aid skills to support individuals affected by crisis or trauma
The training enabled participants to develop a nuanced understanding of human rights principles, including their practical application in the NSCDC’s work, and to demonstrate a clear and comprehensive understanding of the topics addressed.
To maintain momentum, it was recommended that NSCDC integrate human rights and case management training into its regular capacity-building programs, supported by resources and reinforcement for its officers
Comrade Elijah Vitus Echendu, National Coordinator for the IHRC’s Special Monitoring Mission in Nigeria, reaffirmed the IHRC’s continued collaboration with the NSCDC and other stakeholders to strengthen human rights knowledge and practice in Nigeria when contacted.
