On November 30, 2024, the International Human Rights Commission -IHRC conducted a protest meeting and human chain in front of the Chittagong Press Club at 3 PM. The event was held to condemn the brutal daylight killing of Advocate Saiful Islam Alif, aged 35, in Kotwali, Chittagong, and to demand swift justice.
During the protest, speakers called for the immediate arrest of those involved in the murder and urged for exemplary punishment for the perpetrators. They emphasised that the incident is a direct violation of fundamental human rights. Citing the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948), the speakers highlighted that every individual is entitled to the right to life and freedom, and it is the responsibility of the state to safeguard these rights.
The IHRC, which has been actively working in Bangladesh for years to promote and protect fundamental human rights, reiterated its commitment to advocating for justice and ensuring that incidents like these do not go unanswered.
The program was coordinated and presented by renowned human rights leaders and cultural figures, including Mr. Syed Mustafa Alam Masum and Mr. Aurangzeb Khan Samrat. Journalist and human rights advocate Mr. Moin Uddin Ahmed chaired the event.
The event featured prominent individuals from various sectors. Chittagong Bar Association President Advocate Nazim Uddin Chowdhury attended as the chief guest, while Chittagong Press Club Member Secretary Mr. Zahidul Karim Kochi served as the main speaker. Lion Muhammad Elias Sirazi, the SMM IHRC Bangladesh Coordinator and Peace Ambassador, delivered the keynote address.
Special guests included Advocate Abu Bakar Talukder, Journalist SM Kamrul Islam, Ms. Tahera Sharmin, Prof. Abu Hanif, and other notable leaders. Their speeches resonated with the crowd, focusing on the need for stronger measures to uphold human rights and justice in the country.
The protest saw the participation of a large number of individuals, including activists, legal professionals, journalists, and members of the local community. Among the attendees were Advocate Nazim, Ms. Farjana, Mr. Imtiaz, and many others, demonstrating widespread concern and solidarity over the tragic incident.
