NGA: In observance of the Universal Celebration of Human Rights Day 2024, the International Human Rights Commission -IHRC in Nigeria is conveying a One-Day Human Rights Symposium at the National Centre for Women Development Abuja, exploring the theme “Unity in Diversity: Embracing Freedom, Equality, and Dignity for All”, and reiterating its dedication to fostering a society that respects these core values.
The Commission’s Ambassador-at-Large and Head of Diplomatic Mission in Nigeria, H.E. Ambassador Dr. Duru Hezekiah, disclosed this in a statement on Monday, 9th December 2024, in Abuja.
He emphasized that this year’s theme presents a significant opportunity, thereby drawing attention to the complexity of human rights linked to the multicultural and multi-ethnic composition of over 250 ethnic groups and more than 500 languages spoken in Nigeria.
Recurring ethnic and religious conflicts have threatened Nigeria’s national unity and stability; however, Dr. Duru noted that the diversity of Nigeria’s population offers both challenges and opportunities for cultural exchange and understanding, which can promote national unity and cooperation.
According to him, the one-day symposium to be held on Wednesday, 11th December 2024, consequently offers a singular opportunity to acquire knowledge and reinforce ties with other stakeholders to promote “Unity in Diversity: Embracing Freedom, Equality, and Dignity for All.”
Additionally, he mentioned that the occasion signifies the official swearing-in of IHRC’s new Officials; H.E. Ambassador Dr. Malami Shehu Ma’Aji MFR, who was appointed IHRC Special Advisor on Intergovernmental Affairs for Africa Region, with Chief John Paul Ochemba serving as IHRC Advisor on Special Monitoring Mission Nigeria, and Dr. Kingsley Nwokoma as IHRC Commissioner in Nigeria and whose appointments were all duly approved by the IHRC Secretary-General Prof. h.c. Rafał Marcin Wasik.
In the same vein, he pointed out that the IHRC Intervention/Advocacy Project for 2025 would be unveiled during the program.
He further stressed that a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Prof. Mike Ozekhome, will serve as the Keynote Speaker, presenting an opportunity to deepen collaboration and explore new areas of cooperation between the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the International Human Rights Commission-IHRC as human rights are crucial to the comprehensive development of individuals and communities.
