Abuja, Nigeria — 5 June 2025
In a distinguished demonstration of international solidarity, Prof. h.c. Rafał Marcin Wasik, Secretary-General and Peacemaker of the International Human Rights Commission (IHRC), delivered high praise to the IHRC Nigeria Special Monitoring Mission (SMM) during a multilateral online summit. The meeting convened key stakeholders from Africa, the Middle East, and Europe, focusing on the expanding humanitarian mission of IHRC and its unwavering support for crisis-stricken populations.
Recognition of IHRC Nigeria’s Impactful Leadership
In his keynote address, Prof. Wasik commended the IHRC Nigeria team, led by H.E. Ambassador Dr. Duru Hezekiah, for their steadfast commitment to advancing human rights, promoting peace, and delivering essential support to vulnerable communities. He emphasised that Nigeria remains a cornerstone of IHRC’s international strategy, particularly in mobilising youth and volunteers for social impact.
“The Nigeria SMM exemplifies our values of action, resilience, and compassion. Your effective outreach and commitment to serving those most in need set a benchmark for IHRC missions worldwide,” stated Prof. Wasik.
IHRC’s Humanitarian Response: Food Aid to Gaza
A central focus of the session was the IHRC’s ongoing food aid operation in the Gaza Strip. In light of the ongoing humanitarian emergency exacerbated by blockade and conflict, IHRC has intensified its efforts to deliver food supplies directly to civilians facing acute shortages.
Prof. Wasik, speaking with deep concern for the affected population, underlined the scale and urgency of IHRC’s intervention:
“Despite extremely challenging security conditions, our teams on the ground in Gaza remain committed to the uninterrupted delivery of vital food aid. We stand resolutely with the people of Gaza, ensuring that families and children receive the nourishment they desperately need.”
IHRC’s assistance is carried out in partnership with reputable international NGOs, local community organisations, and volunteers to guarantee that food reaches those most in need in a transparent and effective manner. The Commission’s neutral and humanitarian approach continues to earn the trust of beneficiaries and international observers alike.
Nigeria’s Strategic Contribution and Future Engagement
The meeting also spotlighted the achievements of IHRC Nigeria, including rural health initiatives, human rights volunteer training, and efforts to strengthen community resilience through dialogue and social action. Looking forward, the participants discussed expanding the Nigeria SMM’s role in early warning, supporting displaced persons, and further collaboration with global IHRC programmes.
Call for Global Solidarity
The summit concluded with a powerful call for renewed global cooperation in the face of growing humanitarian challenges. All participants reiterated IHRC’s foundational mission:
“We are for the people, by the people, and with the people — in every crisis, every nation, every heart in need.”
