IHRC Welcomes Decisive Action by DSS

The International Human Rights Commission – IHRC Corporation Nigeria, led by the Head of Diplomatic Mission, H.E. Ambassador Dr. Duru Hezekiah, extends its commendation to the Department of State Services (DSS) under the direction of Director General Mr. Tosin Ajayi for the release of twelve detainees, including an individual held since 2022.

“This release, accompanied by financial compensation and a formal apology, marks a significant step toward the domestication of international human rights norms and the restoration of dignity for affected individuals.”

Such gestures underscore DSS’s evolving commitment to human rights, in line with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other international standards.

A Symbol of Accountability and Institutional Reform

IHRC recognises this action as a powerful symbol of accountability and institutional integrity. It echoes the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which strives to reposition Nigerian institutions to uphold fairness, justice, and civil liberties.

Ongoing Systemic Reforms Needed

While this move is praiseworthy, IHRC highlights the persistent need for systemic reform across all of Nigeria’s security architecture. Issues such as:

• Arbitrary detention
• Prolonged incarceration without trial
• Lack of access to legal representation

continue to pose significant challenges. IHRC calls upon all security agencies—including the Police, Military Intelligence, and Correctional Services—to adopt a unified code of conduct based on human dignity, rule of law, and the right to fair hearing.

Towards a Human Rights-Centred Security Sector

“We urge the DSS and all security institutions to implement internal audit mechanisms, prevent abuse of power, and establish transparent public complaint channels,” states the IHRC.

In a remarkable display of civic dedication, the International Human Rights Commission Special Monitoring Mission (IHRC SMM), Rivers State Chapter, successfully executed its Second Community Service Program, managing traffic at the busy Rumukoroshe Junction on Aba Road, Port Harcourt.

Despite torrential rainfall, IHRC SMM Rivers State Coordinator, Comrade Sundrix Ogor, led a determined team of volunteers who efficiently regulated vehicle movement, significantly reducing congestion and preventing potential accidents at one of the city’s most hectic intersections.

“Rain or shine, we serve. Our mission is clear—to contribute meaningfully to the well-being of our society. Today’s service is a testament to the heart and resilience of our volunteers,” emphasized Comrade Sundrix Ogor.

This commendable effort falls under the broader IHRC Community Service Initiative Framework, demonstrating the organization’s guiding principle of service beyond comfort.

Condolences in the Wake of Unprecedented Tragedy

The International Human Rights Commission IHRC Corporation in Nigeria expresses its heartfelt condolences to the Government and people of Niger State—especially the residents of Mokwa Local Government Area—following the devastating flood disaster that has claimed lives, displaced families, and destroyed property. The Mokwa flood has been described as one of the deadliest in recent Nigerian history.

Human and Structural Losses: The Scale of the Disaster

Triggered by torrential rains and the collapse of a nearby dam, the flood resulted in at least 151 confirmed deaths and left over 3,000 people displaced.
Critical infrastructure—including roads and bridges—was also destroyed, significantly hampering rescue and recovery operations.

The meeting convened key stakeholders from Africa, the Middle East, and Europe, focusing on the expanding humanitarian mission of IHRC and its unwavering support for crisis-stricken populations.

Recognition of IHRC Nigeria’s Impactful Leadership

In his keynote address, Prof. Wasik commended the IHRC Nigeria team, led by H.E. Ambassador Dr. Duru Hezekiah, for their steadfast commitment to advancing human rights, promoting peace, and delivering essential support to vulnerable communities. Ambassador Dr. Duru Hezekiah, with the prestigious Agenda 2063 Women’s Impact Award on “Global Excellence in Diplomacy and Leadership: Africa’s Path to Prosperity”, during the Global Excellence Summit held on 24th May 2025 at the Oriental Hotel, Lagos State.

This distinguished recognition celebrates Dr. Hezekiah’s exceptional leadership, unwavering dedication, and transformative impact in advancing the goals of Agenda 2063, particularly as they pertain to women’s empowerment, education, innovation, and inclusive development across Africa.

He assured IHRC’s continued efforts and steadfast commitment in Nigeria and across Africa to holding businesses accountable for their human rights responsibilities, actively advocating for enhanced human rights protections within the corporate sector.

I am indebted to all those who have contributed to it, and most especially Prof. h.c.
