On November 22, 2024, the Special Monitoring Mission of the International Human Rights Commission (SMM IHRC) paid a courtesy visit to the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) Katsina State Chapter office.
The visit aimed to foster collaboration between the SMM IHRC and the NBA Katsina State Chapter to promote human rights, justice, and equality in Katsina State.
During the visit, Amb. Kamaluddeen Yahaya, the State Coordinator of the SMM IHRC Katsina, emphasised the IHRC’s mission to advance and safeguard human rights, foster diplomatic collaboration, and implement humanitarian initiatives. He highlighted the IHRC’s ongoing work in Katsina State, including raising awareness, supporting victims, and engaging with stakeholders to promote justice and equality.
In his response, the Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Katsina State Chapter, Barr. Shafiu Umar, delivered a detailed address on the implementation and protection of human rights through legal frameworks. He emphasised the complexities and challenges in addressing societal issues such as banditry and the corresponding difficulty in ensuring justice and accountability.
Shafiu Umar Esq, criticised certain security agencies for apprehending suspects without sufficient efforts to establish their guilt or innocence, thereby undermining due process and the rule of law. He proposed a partnership with the SMM IHRC to enhance efforts in addressing human rights violations and foster a culture of accountability and respect for human dignity.
Additionally, he highlighted the pervasive issue of misinformation in the digital age, underscoring the dangers posed by unverified dissemination of false information online. He urged stakeholders to prioritise verifying information before sharing and called upon organizations to amplify this message, fostering a culture of responsible information sharing.
The NBA Chairman concluded with an appeal to IHRC members and human rights defenders to remain steadfast in upholding justice, equality, and fairness. By doing so, he asserted, they would contribute significantly to building a society rooted in respect for human dignity and the rule of law.
The visit successfully laid the foundation for collaboration between the SMM IHRC and the NBA Katsina State Chapter. The positive response from the Chairman and members reinforced a shared commitment to addressing human rights challenges and promoting justice and equality in Katsina State.
The engagement was highly impactful, fostering mutual understanding and collaboration between the SMM IHRC and the NBA.
