On the Occasion of the Armed Forces Remembrance Day January 15, the International Human Rights Commission -IHRC in Nigeria salutes fallen heroes who have selflessly given their lives in defense of Nigeria and shared values of peace, justice, and freedom, urging the Federal Government to prioritize timely welfare allocation to veterans.
The Organization’s Ambassador-at-Large and Head of Diplomatic Mission in Nigeria, H.E. Ambassador Dr. Duru Hezekiah, disclosed this in Abuja on Wednesday, 15 January 2025.
He said, today marks a solemn national event that is commemorated annually to honor the sacrifice, patriotic zeal, gallantry, and bravery of the men and officers of the Nigerian Armed Forces, whose blood nourished the seeds of our freedom and liberty, enabling us to live in peace.
According to him, Members of the Armed Forces voluntarily signed up for service, aware that the outcome of their selflessness could be a somber notification to their families.
He stated that the Holy Bible, specifically John 15:13 (KJV), provides a poignant illustration of the spirit of altruism and sacrifice, as stated: “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends”.
“As we honor the bravery and gallantry of our heroes, let us work towards a united and inclusive nation where everyone has a stake and is treated equally and shun tendencies that inflame passions and divide us”, he maintained.
Furthermore, “As we commemorate this day nationwide, let us honor the families of those who made the ultimate sacrifice, providing them with a sense of pride that their loved ones’ deaths served a greater purpose”.
He highlighted that the International Human Rights Commission will continue to strengthen its alliance with the Nigerian Armed Forces and other Sister agencies to show its gratitude for their unwavering cooperation in making Nigeria a safer place.
He, therefore, urged the Federal Government to ensure the timely allocation of necessary resources and logistical support to the Armed Forces, thereby guaranteeing the continued camaraderie and welfare of veterans.
