International Human Rights Day, observed annually on 10 December, serves as a reminder of the core values enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 1948. This historic document established international standards for the protection of dignity, freedom, and equality for every individual. The day provides a special opportunity not only for reflection but also for taking action to build a world where human rights are respected and protected.
This year, as in previous years, the International Human Rights Commission -IHRC, in collaboration with the National Human Rights Organisation (NHRO), marked the occasion in India with great enthusiasm. The celebrations took place at Madarsa Darul Uloom Rizvia, bringing together orphaned and underprivileged children. The initiative aimed to raise awareness among the children about human rights and support their development. During the event, the children were educated about the significance of human rights, their history, and their impact on daily life. Gifts were also distributed to the participants, further emphasising the importance of care for every individual.
The event’s central message highlighted the importance of 10 December, the day in 1948 when the United Nations issued the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Official recognition of International Human Rights Day followed in 1950. In India, the Human Rights Act came into effect on 28 September 1993, and the National Human Rights Commission was established on 12 October 1993. Events such as the one in Odisha demonstrate that the ideals of the Declaration continue to inspire actions around the world.
The event was made possible by the efforts of MD Naushad, President of NHRO in the Odisha region, along with his dedicated team, which included Md Aslam, Md Vicky, Md Javed, Md Sk Washi, Md Ansar, and Md Irshad. Their collective commitment exemplified collaboration in promoting human rights within local communities.
Under the leadership of Prof. h.c. Rafal Marcin Wasik IHRC Secretary General, the organisation remains steadfast in its mission to create a world where human rights are the cornerstone of everyday life. Initiatives such as those in India serve as a poignant reminder that the protection and promotion of human rights begin at the grassroots level.
