On November 18, 2024, a meeting of the International Human Rights Commission SMM IHRC Bangladesh delegation was held at the Chittagong Academy auditorium. The event focused on addressing key challenges related to human rights, democracy, and the future of leadership in the country.
During the meeting, a unanimous decision was made to initiate the formation of a new committee. Discussions centred on safeguarding fundamental human rights, promoting democratic leadership, and establishing a state structure based on the principles of good governance and the rule of law.
The event was chaired by human rights leader Ms. Tahera Sharmin, with SMM Peace Ambassador and National Coordinator Volunteer in People’s Republic of Bangladesh Lion Elias Sirazi as the chief guest. The program was coordinated and presented by Syed Mostafa Alam Masum and Aurangzeb Khan Samrat.
Attendees included Mr Mezbah Uddin Ahmed, Mr Tajul Islam, Dr. Mohammed Sajjad Hossain, Mr Moinuddin Ahmed, Mr SM Kamrul Islam, Mr Touhidul Karim, Mr Nurul Absar Touhid, Engineer Abu Tayyub, Mr Mubarak Ahmed, Adv Abu Bakar T, Lion Kamrul Islam, Engineer Ariful Islam, Engineer Majedul Islam, Adv Golam Morshed, and Professor Abu Hanif. All guests had the opportunity to exchange their perspectives on critical issues concerning human rights.
During his address, Peace Ambassador Elias Sirazi emphasised:
“We must act in the spirit of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights of 1948, focusing on the protection of fundamental freedoms and equality for all.”
He also noted that the Bangladeshi government had taken significant steps by signing the international anti-disappearance agreement, urging citizens to become more aware of their rights.
Amir Hossain Khan added:
“There is no alternative to human rights in building a fair and sustainable state.”
Meanwhile, Syed Mostafa Alam Masum stressed the necessity for human rights activists to take an active role in countering violations of democracy and human rights in Bangladesh.
The SMM IHRC Bangladesh delegation meeting was a crucial step towards strengthening efforts to promote human rights and democracy in the country. Through the dedication of leaders, volunteers, and experts, the event highlighted unity and readiness to address future challenges in these areas.
